What a patch did to your reviews

Steam reviews carry no version, so a patch is read through time: the share of each complaint in the weeks before it against the weeks after, and whether the thumbs down fall. The first week shows what the patch broke; the fourth shows whether it fixed what it meant to. Five games below, with Steam's own counts before and after.

The method

Before and after, by theme

  1. Fix the date. The patch day, from the Steam news post. A report whose window starts there reads only reviews written against the new build, and the weekly trend of a longer report shows the weeks on either side.
  2. Count by theme, not by score. The thumbs down share answers whether players are happier. The share of reviews naming performance, bugs, balance or missing content answers whether the patch did its job. A patch can lift the score and leave its target complaint untouched, and the other way round.
  3. Weigh the weeks. Reviews arrive fastest in the first days after a patch and skew toward the people it upset. Spikes in a theme are flagged against the median week, so a loud first weekend reads as what it is.
  4. Read the refunds. A reviewer who says they refunded or uninstalled after the patch counts as leaving, and the complaint they name is counted with them.

What a Mixed launch costs

Steam's overall score counts every review the game ever received, so a bad first month is paid for over years. Cyberpunk 2077 needed about 540,000 reviews to reach Very Positive in mid 2023, two and a half years after launch. No Man's Sky took eight years, with recent reviews at 94 percent positive while old ones held the overall score down. The recent score moves in weeks; the overall one moves in years. That is the case for reading the reviews in the first week after a patch, not the score.

Five games

Before and after, as Steam counts it

Each card shows the week or month before the patch and the one holding it: reviews and the share of thumbs down, from Steam's own review history. Steam buckets older games by month, so a patch reads as the month around it. Where a OneStar report exists it reads the words in both periods.

Monster Hunter Wilds

PC performance patch, January 27, 2026

Risk of Rain 2

Seekers of the Storm, August 27, 2024

FAQ

Questions, answered plainly

The Steam review analyzer reads any game's reviews from the patch date forward, and a tracked game refreshes daily, weekly or monthly so the after keeps filling in.

Why is there no version table for Steam reviews?

Steam does not record which build a reviewer played, unlike the App Store and Google Play. So a patch is read through time: the weekly trend of complaint shares, spikes in a theme, and a report whose window starts on the patch date.

How long after a patch should I wait before reading the reviews?

Read them twice. The first week tells you whether the patch broke something new, since those reviews arrive fast. Two to four weeks later tells you whether the complaint you patched is still being written, which is the question that matters.

Can a game recover from a Mixed launch?

Yes, and slowly. The overall score counts every review ever written, so No Man's Sky needed eight years of free updates to reach Very Positive even with recent reviews at 94 percent positive. The recent score moves in weeks; the overall one moves in years.

What does OneStar read that the Steam score does not?

The words. For each review OneStar reads in the window, Jev answers whether it names a complaint, which category it falls in, whether the reviewer says they refunded or quit, and what they ask for. Code counts the shares by week, so the before and after of a patch is a number with the reviews behind it.

See what your last patch did, by theme.

Start a report on the patch date and OneStar reads a sample of the reviews since, by complaint, praise and who says they left. Run a report free: 3 report runs a month of up to 500 reviews each and 1,500 reviews a month in all. No card needed.
