How to tell a review bomb from a real problem

A review bomb is a wave of thumbs down about one event. A real problem is a complaint about the build that stays until it is fixed. You tell them apart with three numbers: the volume against the median day, the share of reviews that name the build, and whether the thumbs down come back down. Seven Steam games below show both kinds with Steam's own counts.

The rule

Code flags the day. Jev reads what it says.

OneStar does not ask a model whether a wave is a bomb. Code compares each day's review volume with the median day and flags the ones that stand out; then Jev answers the same typed questions for each review in the flagged day, and code counts the answers.

20+reviews in the day. Below that a loud afternoon on a small game is noise, and the rule stays quiet.
5xthe median day's volume. The median, not the mean, so a launch week does not move the bar for the rest of the year.
1 themethe complaint that led the day, with its share, and the share of thumbs down. Reviews under the confidence cutoff go to an unsure bucket that stays visible.
Three tells

What separates a bomb from a problem

  1. Volume against the median. A bomb is a spike: Helldivers 2 took in many times its median month of reviews in May 2024, most of them in one weekend. A problem can be loud and still look like a normal week, because the thumbs down arrive at the game's usual pace. Counter-Strike 2's cheating complaints never flag a day; they are simply there every day.
  2. What the reviews name. Read a flagged day and sort its complaints. An account requirement, a credit, a publisher's politics and a price in another region are about something outside the build. Stutter, crashes, a nerf, a cut mode and a bugged expansion are about the build. Most waves hold both, and the share of each is the number that decides what to do next.
  3. Whether the share of thumbs down comes back down. A bomb ends when its cause ends: Sony dropped the account plan and the share of thumbs down on Helldivers 2 fell back within days. A problem ends when the patch lands, and not before. Borderlands 4's performance complaints are still the top theme a year on.

What Valve does

Since March 2019 Valve marks periods of off topic review activity and leaves them out of a game's review score, while the reviews themselves stay on the page (Engadget, March 16, 2019). Since August 18, 2026 the score a visitor sees by default is built from reviews in their own language, for games with at least 2,000 reviews and 200 in that language, with the all language score one click away (ITC.ua). Both changes hide a wave from the score. Neither tells a studio whether the wave was right.

That is the gap this page and the Steam review analyzer fill: the counts below come straight from Steam's review history, and a OneStar report reads the words in the flagged days so the share of real complaints is a number, with the reviews behind it.

Seven games

Bombs, problems, and the ones that were both

Each card shows the week or month of the event as Steam counts it: reviews, the share of thumbs down, and the ratio to the game's median. Steam buckets older games by month, so a weekend wave reads as the month that held it. Every dated sentence links where it came from.

Helldivers 2

Review bomb

On May 3, 2024 Sony said PC players would have to link a PlayStation Network account, which does not exist in many countries. Steam reviews turned 95 to 98 percent negative over that weekend, and Sony dropped the plan on May 6.

343,328reviews in May 2024, against a median month of 8,156
67%thumbs down that month, after 12% the month before
42xthe median month: flagged by the 5x rule

HELLDIVERS™ 2: 1,182,456 reviews in all, 26% thumbs down, Mostly Positive on Steam, counted by Steam on 2026-11-05.

Slay the Spire 2

Both at once

Three waves in three months of Early Access. The week of March 19, 2026 answered a beta balance patch that reworked infinite combos; the week of April 16 answered Major Update 1, with most reviews from accounts in China; the week of May 7 was about a consultant credit, not the game.

28,704reviews in the week of March 19, 2026, against a median week of 1,585
55%thumbs down that week, after 5% the week before
18xthe median week: flagged by the 5x rule

Slay the Spire 2: 207,569 reviews in all, 38% thumbs down, Mixed on Steam, counted by Steam on 2026-11-05.

At its July 23, 2025 launch the thumbs down came mostly from reviews written in one language, over performance and over the story's reading of history, and the game got a patch that changed the plot. It is the case most often cited for Valve's move to per language scores.

Steam's history for this game starts after this date.

The PC launch in July 2024 required an Epic Games account that the store page had not mentioned. The rating fell to Mostly Negative within a day on about 1,300 reviews, nearly all about the account and not the game.

3,434reviews in July 2024, against a median month of 54
48%thumbs down that month
64xthe median month: flagged by the 5x rule

EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 6: 7,317 reviews in all, 30% thumbs down, Mostly Positive on Steam, counted by Steam on 2026-11-05.

Overwatch 2

Both at once

The Steam release on August 10, 2023 opened at about 9 to 15 percent positive and became the lowest rated game on Steam at the time. The reviews named the free to play switch, the cancelled PvE mode and paywalled heroes, and more than two thirds were written in Chinese after the game lost its servers in China that January.

178,422reviews in August 2023, against a median month of 7,144
90%thumbs down that month
25xthe median month: flagged by the 5x rule

Overwatch®: 429,987 reviews in all, 68% thumbs down, Mostly Negative on Steam, counted by Steam on 2026-11-05.

Borderlands 4

Real problem

The counterexample. Borderlands 4 launched on September 12, 2025 to complaints about PC performance, and performance is still the leading complaint theme in its OneStar report a year later, through two performance patches. That is a problem, not a bomb.

28,003reviews in the week of September 11, 2025, against a median week of 213
37%thumbs down that week
131xthe median week: flagged by the 5x rule

Borderlands 4: 87,611 reviews in all, 43% thumbs down, Mixed on Steam, counted by Steam on 2026-11-05.

Counter-Strike 2

Real problem

A sustained complaint rather than a wave. Cheating is the top complaint theme in Counter-Strike 2's OneStar report across the last year, through Valve's September 2025 anti cheat update, with no single week standing out against the median.

70,576reviews in September 2025, against a median month of 59,701
18%thumbs down that month, after 20% the month before
1.2xthe median month: under the 5x rule, so no flag

Counter-Strike 2: 9,963,792 reviews in all, 14% thumbs down, Very Positive on Steam, counted by Steam on 2026-11-05.

FAQ

Questions, answered plainly

For your own game, the Steam review analyzer flags bomb days and reads them, and a tracked game alerts you by email or Slack when one starts.

What counts as a review bomb on Steam?

A wave of reviews far above a game's usual volume, about one event rather than the build. OneStar flags a day or week with at least 20 reviews and more than 5 times the median, then reads what the reviews in it say.

Does Valve remove review bombs from the score?

Since March 2019 Valve marks periods of off topic review activity and leaves them out of the review score, while the reviews stay visible. Since August 18, 2026 the score shown by default is built from reviews in your own language for games with enough of them.

How is a real problem different?

The complaints name the build: crashes, stutter, a nerf, a missing mode. They arrive with a launch or a patch and keep coming until a fix lands, so the share of thumbs down does not fall when the news cycle ends.

Can one wave be both?

Yes, and the mixed cases are the common ones. Overwatch 2 and Slay the Spire 2 both had waves that named real grievances about content and balance beside reviews about something else. Reading the words gives the share of each, which is the number that tells a studio what to do.

Is it a bomb or a real problem? Read the reviews and know.

Search any Steam game and OneStar reads its reviews, flags the days that stand out and names the complaint that led each one. Run a report free: 3 report runs a month of up to 500 reviews each and 1,500 reviews a month in all. No card needed.
