Built for Steam

Made for how Steam reviews work

Steam reviews are a thumbs up or down, they carry hours played instead of an app version, and they arrive in waves. Reports read them that way.

  • Playtime at review

Steam records how long each reviewer had played when they wrote. Reports split by it (under 2 hours, 2 to 10, 10 to 50, 50 to 200, 200 hours or more), so a first hour problem and a late game one never blur together.

  • Review bombing

A day is flagged when it brings at least 20 reviews and more than 5 times the median day, with its share of thumbs down and the complaint that led it. Tracked games alert you by email or Slack when one starts.

How to tell a review bomb from a real problem
  • Refunds and quitting

Players who say they refunded the game, uninstalled it or moved to another one count toward why players leave, and the complaints they name are counted with them.

  • Recommended or not

Steam reviews are a thumbs up or down, so reports read them as recommended and not recommended rather than stars, and weight the sample back to the game's real mix of the two.

  • Patches, through the trend

Steam reviews carry no game version, so there is no version table for Steam. A patch shows up in the weekly trend and its spikes, or in a report whose window starts on the patch date.

What a patch did to your reviews
  • Developer replies

Reviews your studio answered on Steam are split from the ones it did not, so you can see which complaints get a reply and which never do.

Review bomb days are part of the trend, open on a free account. Splits by playtime and developer reply are in the audiences section and need Pro.

Game themes

Themes written for games

Game reviews are read against their own list, so pay to win, grind and cheaters are counted as what they are instead of landing in a generic bucket. A review that fits none goes to other or unsure, and both stay visible.

What players complain about

Each complaint gets one main theme, and the report also counts every other theme a review mentions.

Every public Steam report
Before you run one

What a Steam report reads, and what it leaves out

Reports read English Steam reviews for now. If most of your players write in another language, a report covers part of your audience and says how many reviews it read.

By default a report reads the newest thumbs down reviews first, then a sample of thumbs up so praise still has a voice. Shares are weighted back to the game's real mix of the two, so they stand for everyone who reviewed and not only the sample.

Reviews come straight from Steam's public review feed. There is no key to paste and nothing to install, which is also why a rival's game works as well as yours.

A free account gets 3 report runs a month of up to 500 reviews each and 1,500 reviews a month in all, with no card. Pro is $19 a month or $190 a year and adds every figure on every tab, tracked games with alerts by email and Slack, Compare and Ask the reviews. Max is $49 a month or $490 a year for larger reports, more tracked games and written analysis. See pricing.

FAQ

Questions, answered plainly

Three guides go deeper, with Steam's own counts: how to tell a review bomb from a real problem, what a patch did to your reviews and what each Steam review score needs.

Working from an AI assistant? Connect Claude, Codex or Cursor to your reports.

Working on a mobile app instead? See the App Store and Google Play review analyzer.

Can I analyze a game I did not make?

Yes. Steam reviews are public, so any game on Steam works, yours or a rival's, with no Steamworks access and nothing to connect. On Pro, Compare puts two to four games side by side on the same themes.

Does OneStar read Steam reviews in every language?

Not yet. Reports read English Steam reviews today, so a game with a large non-English audience is only partly covered. Each report says how many reviews it read.

How is this different from the Steam review score?

Steam's label, from Overwhelmingly Positive down to Overwhelmingly Negative, comes from the share of thumbs up and how many reviews there are. A report reads the words: which complaints and praise players name, how they change with hours played, who says they refunded, and which days brought a wave of reviews. Two games with the same score can be failing for different reasons.

How does it spot review bombing?

Code compares each day's review volume with the median day. A day with at least 20 reviews and more than 5 times the median is flagged, with its share of thumbs down and the complaint that led it. Tracked games on Pro and Max alert you by email or Slack when one starts.

Can it show what a patch changed?

Steam reviews carry no game version, so there is no version table for Steam. The weekly trend shows complaint shares before and after the patch date, spikes flag a theme that jumps, and a report's window can start on the patch date.

Does it count refunds?

Yes, when the reviewer says so. A player who says they refunded the game counts as leaving, beside players who say they quit or uninstalled. A complaint that the game costs too much for what it offers counts under price and value.

How many reviews can one report read?

Up to 500 reviews on Free, 5,000 on Pro and 25,000 on Max. By default thumbs down reviews are read first, then a sample of thumbs up, and the shares are weighted back to the game's real mix of the two.

Does it cover my game on mobile too?

Yes. A game on the App Store, Google Play and Steam is matched into one product, and the platform split shows how each store's players differ.

Can I ask about my game's reviews from Claude, Codex or Cursor?

Yes, on Pro and Max, in beta. Connect your assistant to OneStar over MCP and it can read your reports, search the reviews behind them and start a refresh after a patch once you approve an estimate in reviews.

See what your players are really saying.
